On the Electron Temperature and Coronal Heating in the Fast Solar Wind Constrained by In-situ Observations
نویسندگان
چکیده
The electron temperature profile in the polar coronal hole inferred by the ionic charge state data of the fast wind exhibits a local maximum of 1:5 10 K. This indicates the existence of electron heating in the source region of the fast solar wind. In this paper, a two-fluid solar wind model, which incorporates additional ‘mechanical’ heating, is used to investigate the heating of the electrons in the coronal hole. We find that the classical collision-dominated description for the electron conduction heat flux is not valid and needs to be severely limited in order for the electron temperatures predicted by the model to agree with constraints supplied by both the solar wind ionic charge state data and the solar wind plasma properties observed at 1 AU. The corresponding constraints on the coronal electron heating will also be discussed.

On Collisionless Electron-Ion Temperature Equilibration in the Fast Solar Wind
We explore a mechanism, entirely new to the fast solar wind, of electron heating by lower hybrid waves to explain the shift to higher charge states observed in various elements in the fast wind at 1 A.U. relative to the original coronal hole plasma. This process is a variation on that previously discussed for two temperature accretion flows by Begelman & Chiueh. Lower hybrid waves are generated...
متن کاملSolar wind ionic charge states during the Ulysses pole - to - pole pass
We analyze and compare the ionic charge composition data for different types of the solar wind (slow wind from equatorial regions, fast wind from low-latitude coronal hole and fast wind from both south and north polar coronal hole) which the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on Ulysses observed during the pole-to-pole pass of its primary mission. The implications on the electron t...
متن کاملCoronal Heating versus Solar Wind Acceleration
Parker’s initial insights from 1958 provided a key causal link between the heating of the solar corona and the acceleration of the solar wind. However, we still do not know what fraction of the solar wind’s mass, momentum, and energy flux is driven by Parker-type gas pressure gradients, and what fraction is driven by, e.g., wave-particle interactions or turbulence. SOHO has been pivotal in brin...
متن کاملCoronal Holes and the Solar Wind
Coronal holes are the darkest regions of the ultraviolet and X-ray Sun, both on the disk and above the limb. Coronal holes are associated with rapidly expanding open magnetic fields and the acceleration of the high-speed solar wind. This paper reviews measurements of the plasma properties of coronal holes and how these measurements have been used to put constraints on theoretical models of coro...
متن کاملWave Modeling of the Solar Wind
The acceleration and heating of the solar wind have been studied for decades using satellite observations and models. However, the exact mechanism that leads to solar wind heating and acceleration is poorly understood. In order to improve the understanding of the physical mechanisms that are involved in these processes a combination of modeling and observational analysis is required. Recent mod...
